Amalgam Introduces the McLaren MCL35M from the Italian GP

As raced at the 2021 Italian Grand Prix

The Formula 1 Heineken Gran Premio d'Italia on the 12th of September saw McLaren achieve what even the title-chasing Mercedes and Red Bull could not in 2021, claiming a fantastic one-two victory. We're delighted to reveal imagery of our 1:8 scale model of the pair of McLaren MCL35Ms as driven that day by Daniel Ricciardo and Lando Norris. Our edition of the Monza-winning car, strictly limited to just 50 pieces, celebrates McLaren’s first one-two finish since the 2010 Canadian Grand Prix and first win since the 2012 Brazilian Grand Prix.

Our development model was recently approved by McLaren's design and engineering teams, having undergone intense scrutiny to ensure complete accuracy of representation. Demand has been huge from our commercial and private customers alike and we are now accepting deposits on these models, with a view to delivering the first batches in the summer.

The 2021 Italian Grand Prix was a stunning turn of events for McLaren. The team had ceded third position in the Constructors' Championship one week earlier to rival Ferrari after a very tough Dutch Grand Prix where they scored only a single point. Norris qualified fourth and Ricciardo fifth for the second sprint of the season, ahead of the Ferraris in seventh and eighth. During sprint qualifying, Ricciardo moved up to third and Norris to fourth after they both overtook Lewis Hamilton at turn two. The duo were both promoted a further place after provisional polesitter Bottas took an engine penalty, putting Ricciardo on the front row alongside Max Verstappen.

A fantastic start from the Australian racer saw him pass Verstappen into the first corner, while Norris defended from Hamilton behind. After the first round of pit stops, Championship contenders Verstappen and Hamilton collided, leaving the McLarens free to challenge for the win. Norris overtook Charles Leclerc, who had taken advantage of pitting under the safety car and closely shadowed Ricciardo to the finish line. It was Ricciardo’s first win since the 2018 Monaco Grand Prix and he rounded the day off perfectly, setting the fastest lap on the race on the final lap.

By the end of the season, McLaren had scored 73 more points than they did in 2020 but were ultimately defeated by a resurgent Ferrari, bouncing back from their previous disappointing campaign. Though eventually pipped to third in the Constructors' Championship, the Woking-based outfit equalled the Italians' podium tally for the season and claimed, not just a race win, but a clear 1-2 victory that no other team could during the 2021 season.
